Five village clubs shortlisted for Voneus Village Cup Community Legends award

17th June 2024

Five village cricket clubs have been shortlisted for the 2024 Voneus Village Cup Community Legends Award, recognising their work serving the rural communities where they play.

The nominees beat off competition from across Great Britain after highlighting their commitment to being pillars of their community, as well as sustainability, diversity, inclusion and helping young people to achieve their potential in the sport.

The clubs to have made the shortlist are Chestfield, from Kent, Grampound Road, from Cornwall, Matching Green, from Essex, Sarisbury Athletic, from Hampshire, and Wrea Green, from Lancashire.

All five are entrants in this year’s Voneus Village Cup, which is being played out over the summer and will see two lucky finalists fight for the trophy at Lord’s, on Sunday, September 15th.

Both competitions are sponsored by Voneus and administered by The Cricketer magazine.

The winner will now be picked by a judging panel comprising Voneus CEO Christopher Traggio, former England cricketer and Voneus Village Cup ambassador Lydia Greenway, and The Cricketer’s editor Huw Turbervill.

Christopher Traggio said: “Thank you to all the clubs who took the time to enter our Community Legends award.

“It is fantastic to see so many clubs recognise the outstanding efforts of those in their community who support them all year round. The dedication to giving back truly embodies the spirit of the competition.

“Congratulations to our five shortlisted clubs who really stood out. It's going to be a tough decision to pick this year's winner, which we'll announce on July 9th.”

Huw added: “Having looked at the quality of entries for this year’s award, finding a winner is going to be an extremely tough job.

“The achievements of those shortlisted just goes to show the importance of cricket, and the Voneus Village Cup, to rural communities around the country.”
